Vindolanda

Vindolanda is a Roman fort and civilian settlement south of Hadrian's Wall, older than the wall itself. Excavations here have produced unusually vivid finds, from shoes and combs to ink-written tablets that record everyday life on the frontier.

The museum displays a selection of the finds, and the grounds include reconstructions of Roman buildings. It is one of the strongest stops along Hadrian's Wall for visitors who want the archaeology to feel human rather than abstract.
