Lindisfarne Priory

Lindisfarne Priory is the atmospheric ruin at the heart of Holy Island's story. Monks founded one of northern England's great early Christian communities here, and the broken arches still carry some of that weight, especially when the tide cuts the island off from the mainland.

The neighbouring St Mary's Church is still active, and the island's causeway makes timing part of the visit. Check the tide tables before setting out; getting stranded is easy and not romantic.
