Hellifield Flashes

Winter floodwaters in fields beside the A65, crowded with ducks, godwits and curlew

Grazing fields just north of Hellifield beside the A65, where rain collects each winter into two shallow pools, Great Dunbar and Little Dunbar. Thousands of ducks and waders feed here, including black-tailed godwits from Iceland. A public footpath crosses the fields. Keep to it and keep dogs close, or the birds take flight. The pin is approximate.
