Settle is a busy little market town in Ribblesdale, under the limestone crag of Castleberg, with a Tuesday market, old coaching inns and a 17th-century house called The Folly. It is a good base for the southern Yorkshire Dales: Malham, the Three Peaks and the caves around Ingleton are all close.
It is also the start of the Settle-Carlisle Railway, one of the most scenic lines in Britain, which climbs through the Pennines to Carlisle. Its most famous structure is the 24-arch Ribblehead Viaduct, a 25-minute ride north.
