Ribblehead Viaduct

The 24-arch viaduct of the Settle-Carlisle line, under Whernside in the Three Peaks

The great viaduct of the Settle-Carlisle Railway, 400 metres long with 24 arches, built in the 1870s across the boggy moor below Whernside. Hundreds of navvies died building the line, and some are buried in Chapel-le-Dale churchyard. A footpath leads from the road to the foot of the arches, and trains still cross it. Ribblehead station is nearby, and the Three Peaks walk passes here.
