Murlough Bay lies between Fair Head and Torr Head, east of Ballycastle, and is known for its remoteness. It has views over Rathlin Island to the Mull of Kintyre, Islay and Jura. Basalt sits on sandstone and limestone here, and old lime kilns are scattered along the shore. With Fair Head it is protected as an Area of Special Scientific Interest.
According to an 11th-century text, Saint Columba landed here when he sailed from Iona to Ireland around 595. Roger Casement, executed by the British for treason in 1916, asked to be buried in the old churchyard at Murlough Bay; he lies in Dublin instead, but a memorial stands here and a small ceremony is held each August.
