Cuilcagh Boardwalk

Boardwalk and staircase across blanket bog up Cuilcagh, nicknamed Ireland's Stairway to Heaven

The Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, also called the Legnabrocky Trail and nicknamed the "Stairway to Heaven", was opened in 2015 to protect the blanket bog on Cuilcagh from walkers' boots. The boardwalk crosses the bog towards the summit ridge, and its final flight of steps gave it the nickname. Cuilcagh, at 666 metres, is the highest point of both Fermanagh and Cavan and Ireland's only cross-border county top. Water from its southern slopes runs underground to the Shannon Pot, the traditional source of the River Shannon.

Its photogenic stairway made it famous: visitor numbers jumped from around 3,000 a year to more than 60,000, raising worries about crowding. Go early or on a weekday, wear proper boots, and be ready for wind and cloud at the top.
