White Island lies in Castle Archdale Bay on the east shore of Lower Lough Erne. Near the shore is a ruined church on the site of an earlier monastery, with a restored Romanesque doorway. Set into its wall is a row of eight carved stone figures, probably made between 800 and 1000 AD and later reused as building stone: robed churchmen, a grinning figure usually taken to be a sheela-na-gig, a frowning mask and one left uncarved.
Nobody knows exactly what they were for; one theory is that they supported a pulpit, another that they tell a story from the life of Saint Patrick. The island is reached by ferry from the marina at Castle Archdale Country Park, a former estate that was a major RAF flying boat base in the Second World War, with a small museum about it.
