Glenfiddich Distillery

Family-owned Dufftown distillery whose spirit first ran on Christmas Day 1887, with Speyside's most polished visitor centre.

Glenfiddich stands at the north end of Dufftown, beside Balvenie Castle. William Grant & Sons still owns it, and it remains the town's biggest employer. It's hard to overstate its influence on the whisky world. In 1963 Glenfiddich began selling single malt abroad as a premium product, which effectively created the single malt category everyone now takes for granted. The triangular bottle dates from 1956.

It's the one distillery in Dufftown with a full visitor centre, offering tours at several levels and a shop. Its sister distillery Balvenie, just behind, also runs tours, though they cost much more. Book either in advance in summer.

A story
William Grant founded the distillery in 1886 in the glen of the Fiddich, "valley of the deer" in Gaelic, which is why there's a stag on the bottle. The first spirit ran from the stills on Christmas Day 1887.
