Mortlach Parish Church

Ancient kirk on the southern edge of Dufftown, on a Christian site said to date from 566, with a Pictish stone in the graveyard.

Long before there was a Dufftown, there was Mortlach. St Moluag is said to have founded a religious community here around 566. In the 11th and 12th centuries it was the seat of a bishop, until the see moved to Aberdeen under David I. The present T-plan church has been remodelled many times, most recently in 1931, but it still contains 13th-century fabric.

In the graveyard stands a Pictish symbol stone from the 7th to 9th centuries. There's also an old watch house in the grounds. Church, graveyard and watch house are all Category A listed. It's a peaceful ten-minute walk south from the clock tower.
