Loch of the Lowes

Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve on a reedy loch where ospreys nest within sight of a hide.

Loch of the Lowes, two miles northeast of Dunkeld, is the largest of a chain of shallow, peaty lochs along the Lunan Burn. The Scottish Wildlife Trust has run it as a reserve since 1969. It's best known for its breeding ospreys, which nest from about April to August and can be watched from a hide about 200 yards from the nest.

Red squirrels, otters and beavers live here too, and in early winter migrant greylag geese roost on the loch in large numbers. There's a visitor centre with a small charge, and the hide is open at all times. On foot, the Fungarth Path comes up from the town.
