Ben Lawers

Highest mountain in Perthshire (1,214 m), rising above Loch Tay and famous for its rare alpine flowers.

Ben Lawers is the high point of a ridge of seven Munros on the north side of Loch Tay. At 1,214 metres it's the highest mountain in Perthshire and the tenth highest Munro in Scotland. It's made of soft, lime-rich schists, unusual for Highland mountains, and that rock supports internationally important alpine plant communities. The range is a national nature reserve.

It's a popular but serious hill day: the ridge is high and exposed, so pick settled weather and carry proper kit. Just to the west, the Meall nan Tarmachan ridge is the other classic hill walk from Killin.

A story
For most of the 19th century Ben Lawers was thought to top 4,000 feet. When the Ordnance Survey measured it properly in the 1870s, it came out at just 3,984 feet.
