Finlarig Castle

Overgrown ruin of a 1629 Campbell tower house near Loch Tay, with a beheading pit by its north wall.

Finlarig stands on a mound on the strip of land between the River Lochay and Loch Tay, about half a mile north of Killin. "Black" Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy built it in 1629 as one of the chain of strongholds the Campbells of Breadalbane used to tighten their grip on the region. Rob Roy MacGregor visited in 1713.

The L-plan tower is in a dangerous state, so admire it from outside rather than climbing about in it. By the north wall is a stone-lined pit where, legend says, prisoners of noble blood were beheaded. Commoners were hanged from an oak. Next to it is the collapsed brick shell of the Breadalbane mausoleum of 1829. It's an eerie, overgrown place and a short walk from the village.
