The Skye Crossing hops from Kyle across the Carrich Viaduct to the islet of Eilean Bàn, then over the high arch of the main bridge to Skye near Kyleakin. It opened in 1995, replacing the ferry across the narrows that had run in one form or another since about 1600. The bridge has footways, so you can walk or cycle across for the view down Loch Alsh.
The bridge was the first big project built under the Private Finance Initiative, and its tolls — at one point £11.40 for a return trip for visitors, many times the Forth Road Bridge — provoked years of protest and a non-payment campaign in which hundreds were arrested. The tolls were abolished in 2004 and the crossing is now free.
