Cherry Island

Loch Ness's only island, a small Iron Age crannog near Fort Augustus that once carried a castle.

Cherry Island, Eilean Muireach in Gaelic, is the only island in Loch Ness. It sits just off the shore near the southwest end of the loch. It's artificial: a crannog, or man-made island, probably built in the Iron Age. In the 15th century a small castle of stone and oak stood on it as a fortified refuge. It used to be larger, but it shrank when the canal works raised the loch's level in the early 1800s, and that rise also drowned its neighbour, Dog Island.

You can't land on it, and there isn't much to see beyond a wooded hump in the water. It's a curiosity to spot from the shore or from a cruise boat out of Fort Augustus.
