After the Disruption of 1843 split the Church of Scotland, the breakaway Free Church congregation in Plockton had no building, so they worshipped in a natural hollow in the hillside: the people stood outside and the minister preached from a small shelter to keep his sermon dry. It was used regularly until 1936.
The site is now a scheduled monument. There isn't much to see — a wall and steps cut into the ground — but it's a quiet, atmospheric corner, and it's still occasionally used for weddings.
