Login's Well

Old well at the south end of the main street where Hudson's Bay and whaling ships filled their water casks

Behind a glass door at the southern end of the main street, Login's Well was once Stromness's main source of fresh water for departing ships. Hudson's Bay Company vessels, whalers and other ships bound across the Atlantic topped up their casks here before leaving Orkney.

It's a small thing to see, but it explains the whole town: Stromness existed because ships needed men, water and a safe anchorage on the way west.

A story
For much of the 18th and 19th centuries the Hudson's Bay Company made Stromness its last port of call before the crossing to Canada, and recruited Orkneymen in large numbers; a cannon captured from an American privateer in 1813 was fired to welcome the Company's ships into the harbour.
