Warbeth Cemetery and Beach

Seaside cemetery and beach on Hoy Sound where the poet George Mackay Brown is buried

West of Stromness, beyond the golf course and the Ness Battery, the coast road reaches Warbeth, a beach and old cemetery looking straight across Hoy Sound to the hills of Hoy. In the newer part of the cemetery George Mackay Brown (1921–1996), Stromness's great poet and novelist, lies under a simple sandstone headstone.

You can walk here along the coastal path from the south end of the town, past the Point of Ness and the battery, and return by the road — a good half-day loop.
