Scalpay is a small fishing island at the mouth of East Loch Tarbert, joined to Harris by a bridge since 1997. On its east coast stands Eilean Glas, one of the four original lighthouses of the Northern Lighthouse Board and the first in the Hebrides, first lit in 1789. The present 30-metre tower with its two broad red bands was built in 1824 by Robert Stevenson.
The lighthouse is reached on foot from the end of the Scalpay road across rough, often wet ground, so wear boots. The fog signal was silenced in the 1980s, but the horn is still there as a decoration.
