Rhenigidale and the Postman's Path

Remote east-coast township on Loch Seaforth that had no road until 1990, reached on an old hill path

Rèinigeadal (Rhenigidale) sits at the entrance to Loch Seaforth, about five miles east of Tarbert. Until 1990 there was no road at all — the only ways in were by boat or along a three-mile hill path over the shoulder of the hills, the route the postman walked. It also had Britain's last single-digit telephone number, "Rhenigidale 1", until 1990.

The road now comes in from the A859, but walking the old path is the better way to arrive, past abandoned settlements and with the sea loch below you. The village has a simple Gatliff Trust hostel, opened in 1962, but no shop or pub.
