Brecon is the main town of Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons), with Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain, a few miles to the south. Riding centres take ponies up into the hills, and the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal starts at the theatre in town. Waterfall Country, with its caves and gorges, is half an hour south-west.
