Pen y Cae is on the limestone edge of the Beacons, where the rivers disappear into caves and come out again over waterfalls. The National Showcaves Centre is in the village. Wild caving and canyoning in Waterfall Country, around Ystradfellte and Pontneddfechan, are a short drive east.
