Francisco "Pachico" Mayoral was fishing on Laguna San Ignacio in 1972 when a grey whale came up alongside his skiff and stayed there until he put his hand out. The behaviour spread among the lagoon's whales and became the basis of everything that happens here now. This is his family's camp.
They run pangas on the lagoon in the January to April season, with cabañas and a camping area at the water's edge, and recommend three or four nights — the lagoon has its quiet mornings and the whales are not on a schedule.
