Activities

San Miguel is a town you walk, and the Parroquia's pink pinnacles, the Fábrica La Aurora and the view from the mirador fill a day without anyone's help. A few things are worth arranging.

Balloon flights go at sunrise over the town and the ranch country around it — the air is only stable in the first hours after dawn, so this means a very early start, and weather cancels flights often. Ask the cancellation policy before paying.

The hot springs in the canyon north of town — La Gruta, Escondido Place, Xote — are shallow thermal pools among the mesquite, and a taxi or a shuttle makes the trip simple. Mornings on a weekday are quiet.

Horses make sense here in a way they do not everywhere: the country around San Miguel is open ranch land and several stables run rides out into it.

Out of town: the painted sanctuary at Atotonilco, Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato city and the Otomí pyramid at Cañada de la Virgen, which can only be seen on the official guided walk.
