Pátzcuaro is a town to walk — the two great plazas, the Casa de los Once Patios, the basilica — and a base for the lake. The boats to Janitzio leave from the Muelle General and need no booking. A guide is worth having for the craft villages around the shore and for the night of 1 November, when the Day of the Dead brings the region its biggest crowds of the year.
