The Peña de Bernal is one of the biggest monoliths in the world, and most visitors walk up the paved path from the village to the base of the rock and the viewpoints there — an easy hour, no guide needed.
Climbing has changed. Since January 2024 the state has closed the south face, the via ferrata and the summit by any route. Climbing is still allowed on the north and west faces, approached from the Chichid'ho side. Some listings online still sell "summit and rappel" packages; they are out of date, and you should not book one.
Bernal sits on the cheese-and-wine route, and the vineyards and the Freixenet cellars are a short drive away.
