Holbox is one of the Yucatan bases for seasonal whale shark trips, usually in the warmer months when the big filter-feeders gather offshore. The best trips are run with restraint: small groups, clear rules, and no chasing.
Choose an operator carefully and listen to the guide. Swimming near whale sharks is extraordinary, but only if the encounter is handled with respect for the animals.
