Holbox is a long, low island off the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, separated from the mainland by lagoon and mangrove. It is often sold as a beach escape, but the better version of Holbox is wilder than that: shallow sandbars, frigatebirds overhead, golf carts instead of heavy traffic, and a horizon that stays flat and bright for kilometres.
The island's strongest experiences are tied to water and wildlife. You can walk the pale shallows toward Punta Mosquito, watch sunset at Punta Cocos, take a seasonal whale shark trip, or head by boat toward Cabo Catoche where the Gulf and Caribbean meet.
Holbox has become more famous and more expensive, so do not expect a secret island. It still earns the trip if you come for the open beaches, birds, and boat days rather than resort polish.
