Yum Balam is the protected natural area that gives Holbox much of its character. The reserve includes lagoon, mangrove, beaches, and surrounding waters, supporting birds, fish, and the seasonal marine life that brings visitors out by boat.
You experience it in pieces rather than at a single gate: a birding boat trip, the quiet side of the island, the mangrove edge, or the offshore whale shark season.
