La Pintada is one of the most important rock art sites in Mexico, located in a canyon about 60 kilometres southeast of Hermosillo. The site contains over 1,500 petroglyphs and pictographs painted and carved by the Seri and Pima peoples over a period stretching back at least 2,000 years. The images include human figures, geometric designs, deer, and serpents, spread across canyon walls in a setting of rugged desert beauty.
Getting there requires a vehicle — a 4x4 is recommended as the last section is unpaved. The site can be visited independently or with guides arranged through Hermosillo tour operators. Allow a full day for the round trip. The canyon itself is scenic and the rock art is dense enough to keep you occupied for several hours. Early morning light is best for photography. Water and sun protection are essential.
