Billy Goat Tavern

Legendary dive bar under Michigan Avenue, birthplace of the Saturday Night Live "cheezborger" sketch

A legendary dive bar in a below-street-level space under Michigan Avenue, accessible from Hubbard Street or through a tunnel from the Magnificent Mile. The Billy Goat has been the newspaper industry's unofficial canteen since the Chicago Tribune moved nearby in the 1930s — the walls are covered with framed Tribune and Sun-Times front pages.

The menu is simple: cheeseburgers (the "cheezborger"), chips, and beer. Nothing else matters. The crowd is journalists, construction workers, tourists who know the SNL sketch, and regulars who have been coming for decades. The bar is open from morning until late. This is the unsentimental, working-class soul of Chicago in an accessible form. Red Line, Grand station.

A story
The Billy Goat was the inspiration for John Belushi's famous "Cheezborger, Cheezborger, no Pepsi — Coke!" Saturday Night Live sketch from 1978, which was itself based on the real behaviour of the tavern's original owner, Billy Sianis.
