A pedestrianised waterfront promenade running along the south bank of the Chicago River through the Loop, developed between 2015 and 2017 into one of the city's best public spaces. The Riverwalk connects Wacker Drive from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Street, approximately 1.25 miles, with continuous access to the river surface via stairs and ramps, and an assortment of restaurants, bars, kayak rentals, and event spaces along the way.
The best way to experience Chicago's famous river-level street grid — where the city's working infrastructure meets its commercial buildings — is from the river itself. Architecture boat tours depart from the Riverwalk; the Chicago Architecture Foundation operates the most popular service. The walk is free and open year-round, though the vendors close in winter.
