A compact neighbourhood west of Wicker Park with a strong Eastern European immigrant heritage, marked by three Ukrainian churches — the most visible of which, St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, rises with gilded domes above the low-rise residential streets. Ukrainian Village has gentrified significantly since the 1990s but retains more of its working-class character than the adjacent Wicker Park.
The neighbourhood's main attraction for visitors is its neighbourhood character rather than specific destinations: handsome brick bungalows and two-flats, a few Ukrainian delis and restaurants, and good bars along Chicago Avenue that attract a local rather than tourist crowd. The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art on Superior Street shows rotating exhibitions. It's one of the better neighbourhoods to wander with no particular plan.
