Epiphany Catholic Church

1885 Gothic Revival Catholic church on Paulina Street, built by the Polish community and still an active parish

A 1885 Gothic Revival Catholic church on Paulina Street that served the neighbourhood's Polish immigrant community before transitioning to its current Latino congregation. The church building — modest by the standards of Polish Catholic churches elsewhere in Chicago, but with good Victorian Gothic detailing — is one of the older standing religious buildings in the neighbourhood.

The surrounding blocks of Paulina Street south of Chicago Avenue show the transition from Ukrainian Village to Pilsen: the architecture becomes more varied, the neighbourhood institutions shift, and the commercial character on Cermak Road to the south becomes distinctly Mexican-American. Walking this transition is one of the ways to understand how Chicago's immigrant neighbourhood patterns have overlaid and replaced each other over more than a century.
