Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral

1915 Byzantine-style cathedral modeled on the Hagia Sophia, the architectural centerpiece of Ukrainian Village

A 1915 Byzantine-style cathedral modeled on the Hagia Sophia, built by the Ukrainian Catholic community that established the Ukrainian Village neighbourhood at the turn of the 20th century. The building is one of the most architecturally distinctive religious structures in Chicago: thirteen copper-covered domes, mosaic-decorated exterior walls, and an interior covered in Byzantine-style paintings and gold leaf.

The congregation has been continuous since the building's construction; the neighbourhood has one of the largest concentrations of Ukrainian-Americans in the United States, a significance that has taken on new dimensions since 2022. The church is open for services on Sunday mornings; guided visits can sometimes be arranged through the parish office. Oakley Boulevard at Rice Street.
