Wabash Avenue YMCA

The Wabash Avenue YMCA is a 1913 brick landmark in Bronzeville, built when the neighbourhood was becoming one of the centres of Black life in Chicago. In its early decades it was more than a gym: it offered housing, job training and social space for newcomers during the Great Migration.

The restored building is best visited as part of a broader Black Metropolis or Bronzeville walk. Its value is in the history attached to the place as much as the architecture.
