The gorge is accessed from Hualien, on Taiwan's east coast. Hualien is served by daily flights from Taipei (Taipei Songshan Airport, 45 minutes) and by the Taiwan Railways express train from Taipei (about 2 hours). The gorge entrance at Xincheng is 30 minutes from Hualien by local train (Xincheng Station is adjacent to the park entrance) or by taxi.
From Hualien, taxis and tour buses run into the gorge; a taxi hired for the day allows full flexibility to stop where you want. Local buses serve the main stops in the gorge from Hualien Bus Station, but service is infrequent and timed travel within the gorge by public bus requires careful planning. Scooter rental in Hualien is popular for the gorge; the road is manageable by scooter but traffic on summer weekends can be heavy.
