Carron Turlough

The Burren's 'disappearing lake', which fills after rain and drains away into the limestone

Carron sits on the rim of a polje, a large flat-floored karst basin, and its floor holds a turlough: a seasonal lake that rises through the limestone after heavy rain and drains away again in dry weather. It is one of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark's geosites. The pin is approximate.

If there is no significant rainfall the water will drain and the lake will disappear only to fill again after more rain.
