Whitley Bay is the classic seaside resort of Tyneside, at the end of the Metro line along the coast from Newcastle. Long sands run north and south of the town, and the promenade connects it with Cullercoats and Tynemouth.
The white dome of the Spanish City, built as a pleasure palace in 1910 and immortalised by Dire Straits in "Tunnel of Love", was restored in 2018 and now holds restaurants and a tearoom. At the north end of the bay, St Mary's Lighthouse stands on a tiny island that you can walk to across a causeway at low tide.
