Wensleydale is the broadest of the Yorkshire Dales, the valley of the River Ure, named after the village of Wensley. It is greener and gentler than Swaledale to the north, and is best known for its cheese, made at the creamery in Hawes.
Its sights run the length of the dale: Hardraw Force near Hawes, the falls at Aysgarth where the Ure tumbles over wide limestone steps, Bolton Castle and Middleham Castle, and the market town of Leyburn. The Wensleydale Railway, a heritage line, runs along the lower dale.
