Elgol is a tiny village on the southern coast of Skye, reached by a winding single-track road from Broadford that passes beneath the dramatic peak of Blaven — the Black Cuillin summit detached from the main ridge. The drive alone is worth the trip.
The village itself is small, but its main claim to fame is as the access point for Loch Coruisk, surely one of the most beautiful spots in the British Isles. Boat trips run from Elgol into the heart of the Cuillin mountains to reach this remote freshwater loch. On foot, the coastal path to Camasunary is a challenging walk on narrow, exposed slopes above the sea, and rescues are frequent; it is only for well-equipped walkers in good weather. Beyond it, the path to Coruisk crosses the notorious "Bad Step", an exposed slab above deep water that is only for experienced scramblers. The longer approach from Sligachan avoids the Bad Step entirely.
