The coastal path from Elgol to Camasunary is not an easy walk. It is about 4 km each way, much of it a narrow path cut into steep, grassy slopes high above Loch Scavaig, with drops to the sea, eroded and slippery sections and burns to cross. People have died on it in recent years, and the mountain rescue team, the lifeboat and the coastguard helicopter are called out here regularly, sometimes several times in a day, for walkers who set out thinking it would be easy. Go only with proper boots and waterproofs, in good weather, and turn back if you are not comfortable.
The reward is Camasunary itself: a remote beach of dark sand under Blaven's great face, with a bothy (a simple open shelter) and a couple of ruined buildings, empty except in high summer. The views of the Cuillin along the way are among the best on Skye.
Beyond Camasunary the path to Loch Coruisk crosses the "Bad Step", an exposed slab above deep water that has caused serious accidents; it is for experienced scramblers only. The safe way to see Coruisk is by boat from Elgol.
