The Mackintosh House is a reconstruction of the principal rooms from the home that Charles Rennie Mackintosh shared with his wife, the artist Margaret Macdonald, from 1906 to 1914. When the original building was demolished, the interiors were measured, catalogued, and rebuilt within the Hunterian Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow, allowing visitors to experience Mackintosh's domestic vision at full scale.
The rooms are remarkable — the drawing room in particular, with its white walls, elongated furniture, and integrated decoration — all expressing Mackintosh's belief that architecture, furniture, textiles, and light should form a single artistic whole. The Hunterian also holds the largest collection of Mackintosh's drawings and design work in the world. Part of the University of Glasgow complex, reached through the Hunterian Art Gallery next door.
