Glasgow has a stronger pub culture than Edinburgh — less tourist-oriented, more local, and considerably cheaper. The city centre Victorian pubs like the Horseshoe Bar and Sloan's are institutions; the West End around Byres Road and Ashton Lane is good for gastro-pubs and craft beer; and the Merchant City has a cluster of cocktail bars and restaurant-bars aimed at the after-work crowd.
Glasgow has a significant live music scene, spread between the pubs (folk and traditional sessions most evenings at various venues), larger venues like King Tut's Wah Wah Hut (which gave Oasis their first break), and major concert halls. The Barrowland Ballroom in the East End is one of Britain's legendary music venues — standing, old-fashioned, and with the best sprung dancefloor in Scotland.
