Princes Square is a Victorian courtyard shopping centre off Buchanan Street, built behind the retained facade of a 19th-century warehouse and covered with a spectacular Art Nouveau-inspired glass dome and ironwork atrium. The interior is one of the most beautiful commercial spaces in Scotland — airy, light, and handsome — and the fact that it houses upscale shops and restaurants does not diminish the pleasure of the architecture.
The central atrium is worth entering even if you are not shopping. The ironwork peacocks and floral motifs on the upper balustrades are among the best examples of this kind of decorative metalwork in Britain. The basement food court is unusually good for a shopping centre; the rooftop restaurant has views over the Buchanan Street pedestrian area.
