Sloan's

Address 108 Argyle Street, Glasgow

Sloan's in the Argyle Arcade is Glasgow's oldest bar and restaurant, trading in various forms since 1797 in a location that was once the main covered shopping thoroughfare of the city. The building is splendid — ornate Victorian plasterwork, a grand ballroom upstairs, and a warren of rooms and bars below that still feel genuinely old rather than refurbished to look old.

The pub serves food, has live music most weekends in the function rooms, and holds several events including regular ceilidhs (Scottish country dancing evenings) that are popular with tourists and locals alike. The Argyle Arcade itself — a Victorian covered passage lined with jewellers — is worth walking through to reach it.
