The Ubiquitous Chip

Address 12 Ashton Lane, Glasgow G12 8SJ

The Ubiquitous Chip is Glasgow's most celebrated restaurant, open since 1971 on Ashton Lane in the West End and consistently credited with pioneering modern Scottish cooking — the use of Scottish ingredients, seasonal menus, and a focus on provenance long before farm-to-table became a cliché everywhere else. The cobbled lane setting, the covered vine-hung courtyard, and the deliberately eccentric name (a riposte to the chip being Scotland's most-maligned cliché) give it an identity that has sustained it for fifty years.

The cooking is high-quality Scottish: venison, langoustines, Hebridean scallops, Aberdeen Angus beef, and a wine list strong in unfashionable but well-chosen bottles. Prices are significant but not absurd for what you get. The brasserie section is slightly cheaper than the main dining room. Booking essential for dinner.
