Teampull na Trionaid — the Temple of the Trinity — is a ruined medieval church complex on a small tidal island in North Uist, accessible via a causeway at low tide. The ruins date from the 13th century and are associated with the daughter of Somerled, the Viking-era ruler who dominated the western seaboard. Local tradition calls it the oldest university site in Scotland; what is certain is that it was a substantial ecclesiastical establishment that drew scholars from across the Hebrides and Ireland.
The setting is quietly dramatic: a cluster of low stone walls on a green tidal island surrounded by the North Uist lochs and their wildlife. Otters are often seen here. The ruins require some imagination to read — they have not been restored or interpreted — but the scale of what was once here is clear in the foundations. The site is reached from the A865 road, just south of Claddach Baleshare.
