Harbour Street

Plockton's waterfront lane of whitewashed cottages, moored boats and New Zealand cabbage trees

Harbour Street is Plockton: a single lane of whitewashed houses running along the shore of the inlet, with gardens across the road at the water's edge. The cabbage trees (Cordyline australis) planted along it since the 1960s thrive in the mild, sheltered climate and give the view its unlikely subtropical air.

Stroll the length of it in the evening, when the light falls on the hills across Loch Carron. Seal-watching boat trips leave from the harbour in summer, and the Plockton regatta fills the bay with small sailing boats in late July and early August.
