Portree Harbour

Cliff-sheltered harbour with Skye's famous row of painted houses and a Telford pier

The harbour is the reason Portree looks the way it does: a deep inlet protected by cliffs, with a pier by Thomas Telford and a terrace of brightly painted houses lining the quay. It's the most photographed view on Skye, best from the road above the harbour or from the path up to The Lump.

Down on the quay there are fish and chip shops, seafood restaurants and the boats that run wildlife and fishing trips into the Sound of Raasay. Come in the evening, when the day-trippers have gone and the light turns soft over Raasay across the water.
